“The partnership between Greece and the United States is at a very high level,” the head of the Prime Minister’s press office, Dimitris Tsiodras, said in an interview with Naftemporiki TV.
“Greece is a country that maintains very good relations with Israel and with the other countries in the region,” he said, which is proven by the Prime Minister’s travels,” he said and added:
“As far as the F-35 is concerned, we have made the relevant request, and we are very close to joining the program. Let’s remember that in 2019, Turkey was in the F-35 program and we were not. Now things have changed.”
He also pointed out that “the Americans do not allow just anyone to join this particular program.”
“The good news will not be delayed,” he underlined.
Earlier, government sources stressed that “Greece, as a consistent and reliable partner and ally, will receive what has been agreed upon (on the armaments program).”
On his part Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis noted in a recent interview: “The government wants to speed up the F-35 issue so that the first fifth-generation fighters arrive in 2028. It is a matter of time. Greece will join the F-35 program.”
At the same time, what is emphasized is that the specific issue is not connected to the F-16s that Turkey is asking for in order to approve Sweden’s application to join NATO.
More specifically, according to sources, progress is expected on the issue of the F-35 by the end of February.
